  3.      The  S30  register  controls how long the modem  will  wait  for  data
  4. passing  through. You set S30= in 10 second increments (6 = 60  seconds,  1
  5. Min). I have tested it, AT&F&C1&D2 (init) then ATS30=3 and it  disconnected
  6. 30  seconds  after  the last data I typed (on either  computer,  caller  or
  7. called). Only one modem was set to S30=3.

  9.      If  thise  doesn't work, there may be enough line noise so  the  modem
  10. sees the line noise as data.

  12.      It  can  make a big difference whether you call out or  someone  calls
  13. in to you. Also there is a difference between calling different areas (area
  14. codes  or exchanges) as different equipment will be involved.  Calling  the
  15. phone  company will rarely do any good, because the problem is not on  your
  16. line.

  18.      However,  because  the problem is not rare, (in fact  common  in  some
  19. places),  operators of BBS and other modem users have come up with a  cheap
  20. simple solution which works most of the time.

  22.      You  can  make (or have made) a 'noise filter'. The  modem  doing  the
  23. rec'ving  must be the one with the filter. Parts are less than  $2.50.  You
  24. plug  into the modem with a "T" adapter  (about $2.50 at Radio Shack)  will
  25. let  you put the 'filter' on and still use the phone in that jack. (I  have
  26. never  seen  a  'noise filter' for sale. The only device I  ever  saw  that
  27. claimed to stop noise, cost more than $45 and did nothing at all).
